C.232 NOTICE OF MOTION ON GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS TO IMPOSE EXPENDITURE CUTS ON THE ARMED FORCES INCLUDING THE DISBANDING OF THE SECOND BATTALION OF THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF FUSILIERS
The following Motion had been received and set out in the Summons in the names of:

Councillors D Cassidy, M Connolly, A Quinn, John Smith and S Walmsley

“The Council notes with concern the recent decision of the Government to reduce our armed personnel resulting in a proposal to disband the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

The Fusiliers Regiment and their wider families play an important role in the community and day-to-day life of the Borough. The Fusiliers are Freemen of the Borough and the regiment is an integral part of our history, with troops and their families making a great sacrifice throughout the generations. They have defended us and it is right that we support them now in their hour of need.

The only way that the Government will reconsider this decision is if 100,000 signatures are secured on the Government’s e-petition web site.

RESOLVED:

This Council will use every means at its disposal to prevail upon the Government to reverse this proposal, including:

(i)hosting a link on the Council’s home web page to the Government’s e petition web site;
(ii)joining forces with the MEN; Bury Times; Radcliffe Times and Prestwich & Whitefield Guide to co-ordinate responses to the e petition web site;
(iii)make available hard copy petitions for signature at all Council owned buildings;
(iv)requiring the Leader to write to all Councils and MP’s in the North West to seek their support.”

The Motion on being put was carried unanimously.
The meeting started at 7.00 pm and ended at 8.00 pm.
