INTRODUCTIONS

All those present will introduce themselves. The adults present will explain what they do within the Council.

The Chair welcomed all those present to the meeting and asked that everybody introduce themselves.

DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST (Councillors)

Those present are asked to consider whether they have an interest in any of the matters on the Agenda and if so, to formally declare that interest.

WALKING RAINBOW

Emily will report at the meeting.

Minutes:

Emily Kay reported on an event taking place in Bury on 13th July to celebrate equality and diversity. A march will leave Bury Town hall at 1pm with people encouraged to wear bright dress.

 

YC.7

YOUTH MARKET

Heather will give an update at the meeting.

Minutes:

Heather Walton reported that the Youth Market would be held on 28th June within the Lancashire Fusiliers Museum with the opportunity for young people to sell their own products. It was reported that there would be a stall representing the Youth Cabinet and volunteers should contact Heather in the first instance.   It had been agreed that flyers would be produced to publicise the event.

ELECTRONIC QUESTIONNAIRE

A report will be given at the meeting.

Minutes:

Lesley Davidson attended the meeting and informed the Youth Cabinet that funding had been obtained to draft 2 electronic questionnaires to be completed by pupils in ICT. The views of Youth Cabinet members were sought on the draft questionnaire and the following suggestions were made:

 

  • Avoid questions being too wordy
  • A prefer not to say option should be included on each question
  • Expand question to specify use of particular social media sites
  • Causes of stress question should be rated on a 1-10 scale

CIRCLES OF INFLUENCE

Heather will give an update at the meeting.

Minutes:

Heather reported that the event would take place on 27 June  with lots of decision makers and young people to be in attendance.

 

It was further reported that there would be a primary event for year 6 pupils held on 8th July with any volunteers to contact Heather.

THE BIG DEBATE

Those present will debate the following topic:

 

Should girls under the age of 16 need parental consent to have a pregnancy terminated?

Minutes:

SHOULD girls under the age of 16 need parental consent to have a pregnancy termination

 

All of the young people present were asked to decide whether they felt girls under the age of 16 should require parental consent to have a pregnancy termination.

 

A debate then took place with a vote at the end and the majority agreed that parental consent should not be a requirement.

 

It was agreed

 

That a debate take place at the next meeting on the issue of “should cannabis be legalised?”

YOUTHFORIA

Emily will give an update at the meeting.

Minutes:

Emily Kay fed back on training and youth events and reported on the ongoing mental health campaign. The next meeting will be held on 13th July in Bury.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Minutes:

 

                 Members of the youth Cabinet placed on record their thanks and appreciation to Cara Pearson who was attending Youth cabinet for the last time.

 

              Leon Hollinrake, Rochdale MYP, informed the Youth Cabinet of a campaign aimed at encouraging young people between 18-25 to register to vote and enquired whether Bury would be interested in running its own campaign.
