UKYP INTRODUCTIONS

The newly elected UKYP representatives are:-

 

Bury’s MYP – Bilal Qureshi

 

Deputies – Emily Branney and Nathan Hughes

Minutes:

Bilal Qureshi, Emily Branney and Nathan Hughes attended the meeting and introduced themselves to the Cabinet.

 

Following the recent UKYP elections Bilal had been elected as Bury’s Member of Youth Parliament and Emily and Nathan were his deputies.

 

It was agreed:

 

That Bilal, Emily and Nathan are congratulated on their successful campaigns.

That the Minutes of the last meeting held on 2 February 2015 be approved as a correct record and signed by the Chair.

ELECTION OF NEW YOUTH CABINET CHAIR

Those wishing stand as Chair to the Youth Cabinet for the coming year will be asked to give a short speech about what they can bring to the role.

 

A ballot of those in attendance will be held.

Minutes:

Nominations were requested from those present.

 

Molly Healy and Nicole Parry indicated that they would like to be considered for the position of Chair to the Youth Cabinet.

 

Molly and Nicole were asked to explain why they felt they would make a good Chair.

 

All of the young people present were asked the vote.

 

Following the election the votes were counted and;

 

It was agreed:

 

1.   That Nicole Parry be elected as Chair to the Youth Cabinet for 2015/2016

 

2.   That Molly Healy be elected as Deputy Chair to the Youth Cabinet for 2015/2016

 

3.   That all those present be thanked

YOUTH CABINET CAMPAIGNS

Two campaigns being supported are:

 

Pastoral support

Work experience

 

An extra campaign has been requested with regards to Poundland and Poundworld restricting the number of school children allowed into their stores at any one time.

 

Those present are asked to split into groups and write a letter to the two retailers asking about the use of this practise and how it makes the young people feel.

 

The most appropriate letters chosen by the Youth Cabinet members will be sent to the stores.

Minutes:

It was explained that the Youth Cabinet had been involved with two campaigns, one local and one national and had also been asked to promote another campaign.

 

Some of the discount and pound shops had put a policy in place stopping young people from entering in groups and only allowing them into the premises one at a time.

 

Those present were asked to split into groups and compose a letter to the stores from the Youth Cabinet asking for more information on the policy and setting out their own thoughts.

 

It was agreed:  

 

That the information is collated and a draft letter produced which will be agreed by the Cabinet at its next meeting.

YOUTHFORIA UPDATE

An update will be given at the meeting.

Minutes:

Bilal reported that he had attended the Youthforia meeting which had been held the previous day at Oldham.

 

The group had discussed mental health issues and how this issue was being dealt with for young people in the region.

 

The outcome of the debate had been that the group agreed that teachers should receive training on mental health issues. It was also agreed that schools should nominate a mental health ambassador who would work on raising the profile of mental health issues in their school and work with the school to establish links between mental health services and charities.

 

Bilal stated that this would hopefully be rolled out to all high schools and colleges across the borough.

 

It was agreed:

 

That Bilal be thanked for his update.

THE BIG DEBATE

FREEDOM OF SPEECH & BANTER

 

Should there be limits on Freedom of Speech?

Is banter bullying?

 

 

Minutes:

FREEDOM OF SPEECH SHOULD BE RISTRICTED IN THE UK

 

Those present were asked to decide whether they agreed with the statement or not by moving to the relevant side of the Council Chamber. Those that were unsure moved to the back.

 

The groups were asked to come up with opening statements in support of their decision and a debate ensued.

 

Following the debate, closing statements were made and then those present were asked to decide again whether they agreed with the statement.

 

The majority of the Youth Cabinet present at the meeting concurred with the statement that there should be some restrictions on freedom of speech in the UK.

 

It was agreed:

 

That the debate at the next meeting of Youth Cabinet would be:

 

Do we need the British Monarchy?

ANY OTHER BUSINESS / ITEMS FOR THE NEXT MEETING

Minutes:

Lisa Harvey Nebil reported that the 2015 Walking Rainbow 2015 would be taking place on 12 July.

 

The event celebrated diversity and all were welcome to attend.
