DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST

Councillor Members are asked to consider whether they have an interest in any matters on the agenda and, if so, to formally declare that interest.

That the Minutes of the Meeting held on 7 February 2019 be approved as a correct record.

YC.3

NORTH MANCHESTER STEERING GROUP - YOUTH FOCUS

Minutes:

Louis Tweedale from the North Manchester Youth Focus Steering Group attended the meeting to introduce himself.

 

He explained that part of his role was to help connect the different Youth Council’s across the North West and to see how each town’s meeting was structured. Louis explained that he was also the MYP for Rochdale.

 

Louis reported that the Youthforia North West Residential would be taking place from Friday 26 April at Brathay Hall in Ambleside.

 

The weekend would include various workshops, discussions and debates as well as activities such as canoeing and orienteering.

 

The event would give young people from across the North West the opportunity to come together and discuss their work in their areas and local and national campaigns.

 

Louis reported that Rochdale Youth Council were campaigning around knife crime and were more than happy to share their work with Bury Youth Cabinet.

 

It was agreed:

 

That Louis be thanked for his presentation.

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND DEPUTY CHAIR

Those wishing to stand as Chair of the Youth Cabinet are asked to give a short presentation setting out their manifesto.

Minutes:

It was explained that this was the last Youth Cabinet Meeting of the Municipal Year.

 

Youth Members of the Youth Cabinet were invited to stand as the new Chair and Deputy Chair of the Group.

 

The young people wishing to take on the roles were given the opportunity to explain why they would be suitable candidates.

 

Five Youth Members put themselves forward and gave a short presentation and a vote was held.

 

It was agreed:

 

1.     That Rhiannon Ashton be appointed as Chair to the Youth Cabinet for 2019/2020.

 

2.     That Elle- Sue Calderbank be appointed as Deputy Chair to        the Youth Cabinet for 2019/2020.

YOUTHFORIA

An update will be given at the meeting.

Minutes:

Emma Greenwood reported that the last Youthforia meeting had taken place at the beginning of April.

 

The main discussions at the meeting had been concerning knife crime.

 

Emma explained that she had been able to meet with other MYPs and POSH ambassadors at the meeting.

CIRCLES OF INFLUENCE

An update will be given at the meeting

Minutes:

Adele Crowshaw and Heather Walton explained that the Circles of Influence would be taking place on 27 June 2019.

 

All high schools were invited to send student representatives to the event and the Youth Members of the Youth Cabinet would help facilitate the event.

 

It was explained that there were currently 4 topics that would be discussed at the event:

 

Curriculum for Life

Environment – Pollution

Knife Crime

Mental Health

 

It was asked whether any other topics should be added and it was suggested that ‘Places to Go’ be included as a topic as young people felt that they didn’t have anywhere to go that didn’t cost money or involve a lot of travel.

YOUTH CABINET PLEDGE

Adele will report at the Meeting.

Minutes:

It was explained that the Youth Cabinet were required to produce an up to date Constitution/Terms of Reference.

 

Members in attendance were asked to have a think about what the Constitution should include and report back to the next meeting.

YC.8

THE BIG DEBATE

If time allows, Members of the Youth Cabinet will choose a topic to debate.

The Youth Cabinet split into teams to debate the following issue:

 

Should the death penalty be reinstated in the UK?

 

It was agreed:

 

That  the death penalty should not be reinstated.
